medical occupation courses

TGGS has a specific programme designed to support those who wish to pursue a career in a medically related field such as Medics, Vets, Dentists, Nurses, Occupational therapists, physiotherapists, pharmacists, chemists, opticians and midwives. This is achieved through our excellent Medicine Society (Medsoc). In 2021 twelve Year 13 students were successful in receiving Medicine offers, with eight other students gaining places on Vet, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Optometry, Dentistry and Nursing courses.

This unique and exciting opportunity helped students who are considering any health related career or are interested in the science of the human body.  Prospective medical and veterinary students have also had opportunities to practise their Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) technique with local junior doctors who ran a series of mock interviews to prepare the students.

In 2020-21, despite the restrictions of Covid Medsoc had a very active year meeting every week either in person or online.  Under student leadership the group members researched different medical topics and presented them to each other, discussed topical and ethical issues in healthcare, and participated in workshops led by staff members on Medical Ethics, What makes a good Medical Professional, Choosing a Medical School and Preparing for UCAT tests.  The students also organised a number of speaker meetings with doctors, a Surgeon, medical students, a Head Nurse, a Vet and a Vet nurse.  With the usual in person work experience opportunities unavailable for much of the year, staff supported students to find virtual work experience opportunities in Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine.
