Extra-Curricular & Enrichment

During the school day there are many clubs and societies open to all in the school. These include:

Dartmoor Society

This society is open to girls in Years 9-13 who have an interest in walking and camping on Dartmoor. Girls learn navigational skills, the value of co-operation and interdependence and an appreciation of the environment. Activities take place on alternate weekends throughout the winter.

We have established a strong tradition of involvement in the annual Ten Tors Challenge. The emphasis is on team work as the girls walk and camp together on Dartmoor in all sorts of weather conditions, however, our teams have had outstanding success over many years.

Drama and Dance

Both the drama and dance clubs are thriving and the girls get plenty of opportunity to practice at the clubs, to visit other productions and to perform in our own productions. At TGGS the drama students have regular productions for all age groups; recent productions have included 'Olivia', 'Dream On' and 'Ebeneezer'. Students also have the opportunity to earn house points through a House Dance Competition.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

The DofE (Duke of Edinburgh Award) enables girls at TGGS to develop their mind, body and soul in a non-competitive environment. Its ability to elevate self-confidence, skills and aspirations should not be underestimated.

The DofE programme at TGGS is driven by ten guiding principles:

• Non-competitive, personal challenge

• Achievable by all

• Voluntary

• Inspires personal and social development

• Personalised to an individual’s circumstances

• Balanced development of the whole person – mind, body and soul

• Scope for progression

• Achievement of personal challenging goals

• Encourages commitment and persistence

• Enjoyment and fulfillment

A DofE Award at any level represents a great achievement and will undoubtedly compliment academic success at TGGS, in Higher Education, and in future vocational situations.

There are multiple opportunities for leadership at the school; students can represent their form on the Student Council, they can be Form Sports Captain, E-safety Ambassadors, run for Head of House or Head Girls, Subject Prefects or Key Stage 3 Leaders. The Sixth Form girls are expected to take a leading role in school life, especially in working with younger members of the school. They are encouraged to involve themselves in the many clubs and activities operating in the school, for example sports clubs and teams, choir, orchestra and those organised by the students themselves. 6th Form and Y9 can also be academic mentors to younger students

Maths Challenge

Our students take part in annual National Competitions at Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels. Questions are interesting, thought provoking and fun and certificates are awarded for levels of success achieved. Each year a few students are asked to take part in the second round which is much more demanding and many have been very successful.

There is a strong musical direction to the school. The girls have the opportunity to take part in a range of activities including award winning ensemble groups such as the Choir, Orchestra, String group, Jazz band, Pop band, Close Harmony Choir and the student run Flute group. There are 12 peripatetic staff attached to the school so there is tutoring available for most instruments. There are also plenty of opportunities to perform such as Carol services, Open evenings, Torbay Proms, Carol Singing, Assemblies and Community events.

We have had considerable success in team and individual sports with girls competing at local, national and international level. Games and athletics form a large part of out-of-school activities. Aerobics, cricket, fitball, boxercise, hockey, netball, tennis, badminton, rounders, swimming, athletics, tag rugby and football are available. Our new sports hall greatly enhances our ability to provide sporting opportunities. There is an extensive programme of fixtures and girls are encouraged to attend extra coaching sessions as well as enter themselves for area and county trials and assessment development centres.

Talent Show and Entertainment

Every year the Heads of House organise an end of year entertainment at Christmas and in the summer. In addition to this the PTA organise an annual TGGS has got talent so there is plenty of opportunity for performers.

Ten Tors

TGGS enters teams at each level in the annual Ten Tors Event on Dartmoor. Training on the Moor takes place over several months preceding the event, led by qualified members of staff and voluntary helpers. The girls involved will learn skills of navigation, trekking, wilderness camping, and teamwork. At the 2017 Ten Tors event, TGGS were able to field five teams consisting of six in each team. We have established a very good reputation and can offer an exciting, challenging, and safe training programme for girls in Years 9 to 13.
