The programme of study at Key Stage 3 is designed to support students in becoming fluent communicators in both their speech and their writing, enabling them to express their ideas and emotions with confidence.  Reading – both in class and for pleasure – plays a vital role in helping them to develop emotionally, intellectually and culturally and is widely encouraged across Key Stage 3.

In Year 7, students study:

  • Shakespeare – A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Class novel - The Tulip Touch
  • Wider Reading Challenge
  • An Introduction to Poetry
  • Writing Skills – persuade , advise, review

In Year 8, students study:

  • Shakespeare –The Merchant of Venice
  • Class novel - The Book Thief
  • Wider Reading Challenge
  • Pre-1900 Poetry
  • Writing Skills - imagine, describe, argue

In Year 9, students study:

  • Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet
  • Class novel - To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Wider Reading Challenge
  • Comparative approaches to poetry
  • Writing Skills - describe, argue/persuade, review
  • Preparation for GCSE – Responses to unseen texts

There are 6-8 core assessment pieces per year at Key Stage 3; these are completed in the English Key Assessed Workbooks.
