RSE - Parents right to withdraw 2023/24

Dear Parent and Carer,

RSE - Parents right to withdraw

In 2020, the government introduced a statutory PSHE programme that all schools in England must follow (Relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)). Part of this programme includes Relationships and Sex Education. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from the Sex Education element of the programme (but not the Relationships aspect) up until 3 terms before the pupil’s 16th birthday, whereupon pupils can choose to opt in. This right to withdraw does not include the sex education element which sits in the National Curriculum as part of science. Please note that this is the only aspect of PSHE and RSE that parents/carers can exercise their right to withdraw their child.

You can find an overview of our PSHE & RSE programme which indicates when topics are taught on the school website (RSE Policy 2023.pdf (tggsacademy.org)). You can also find a copy of this form on the school website, at the end of the PSHE policy section. We have worked hard to ensure that all our PSHE lessons are delivered in a sensitive manner and are age appropriate. We are also members of the PSHE Association who have published guidance and resources to support schools in planning their curriculum to meet the government requirements.

As a school we promote the values of respect, resilience, kindness and open minds and believe that our PSHE programme gives our students the skills to navigate an increasingly complex world.  We are holding an online forum on 20th July, (4:30pm – 5:30pm) where parents can ask any questions about the curriculum and the materials we use.

I hope that the information provided gives you everything you require to make an informed decision as a parent but if you still wish to withdraw your child from sex education lessons for the academic year 2023 –24, please complete the form attached.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours faithfully
