Music - further information

KS3

In Year 7, the focus is on developing performance skills through a range of musical styles, as an introduction to the core elements of music. We begin by exploring vocal techniques and a cappella music, working towards the Year 7 Concert. During this event, we showcase a range of musical talent, including the battle of the class performances, singing for the House Competition Trophy! Other topics covered include Instruments of the Orchestra, Folk Music and Keyboard Skills.

In Year 8, students develop their musical expression through practical activities exploring a range of new styles. Students have access to Apple Macs with Logic Pro X software, which are used to develop composition skills. This feeds into Year 9 where students also have the opportunity to develop their practice independently through a solo performance project. All topics covered are underpinned by theoretical understanding, covering a range of performance and composition techniques, in preparation for the GCSE syllabus.

At Key Stage Four, the GCSE course allows students to personalise their musical development. They perform and compose in the style that best suits them and they explore great musical works, developing strong analytical skills and an appreciation of a wide range of musical styles. Typical classroom practice is a mixture of independent and group work, as well as pupil and teacher-led discussion.
