Fantastic GCSE Results for 2018

Our students have risen to the challenge of the new GCSEs and surpassed previous year’s performances with 70% of grades being equivalent to A grade or better, a rise of over 7%.

There were particular highlights with Vibodha Wijesinghe and Hanna Andrejczuk managing to achieve all Level 9s – that’s a grade above the old A* – in almost all subjects. However, Head of Key Stage 4, Sophie Bucklar, said: ‘This is about all the students. We have excellent teachers – only last week our students’ A Level results mean that we are the 6th highest all-girls state school in the country – and students who work hard, and they do here, do well.’

Whilst very pleased for the students, Headteacher Dr Nick Smith was keen to stress that his key priority is student welfare. He says: ‘While academic achievement is what we enable to happen, teaching our students how to enjoy being successful is more important and we will be explicitly teaching this going forward’. Deputy Head, James Gregory, also spoke in the same vein stressing that evidence from Stamford University shows that whilst talent is important, the biggest indicator to future success lies in students being confident enough to fail and then to try again, to learn from their mistakes.

Dr. Smith , when asked what he wants students to remember TGGS for, said’ I want them to feel part of the community through increased House activities, to realise that being young is something to be treasured, and that hard work does not necessarily mean pressure, but simply trying to do your best in all fields of life.’ He noted that we will be running over 100 trips next year as part of this drive to make education fun and relevant. But, he added ‘today belongs to the present Year 11 who have done remarkably well.’
