Centenary Celebration Day

Past, Present and Future.

Saturday last heralded a fantastic day in the history of our school.

But the extraordinary achievement of having completed one hundred years of outstanding education here in Torbay was upstaged by the remarkable demonstration of loyalty and emotion shown by the huge number of past pupils, who returned to pay homage to their old school.

From the early war years in the nineteen thirties, through to the new romantic nineties, every decade was represented.  Students travelled from far and wide, many with siblings and offspring who had also been pupils in the school.  There were stories of wartime hardship, of the swinging sixties and of recent career moves.  Many old girls met their peers for the first time in years; sometimes intentionally, sometimes not.

After a tour of the school with current students, past pupils gathered in the Old Hall.  We were treated to a selection of music and drama, performed by current pupils, followed by a talk by Doctor Smith who reflected on some of the more notable events taking place in the school over the past hundred years.

Finally, one of our very oldest old girls did us the honour of opening the new amphitheatre, cutting the ribbon with great gusto despite the inclement weather conditions.

Laughter and tears, smiles and frowns, cheering and respectful silence.  It was a day of great emotion, and a fine testament to the loyalty of some of those who have passed through the corridors of our school during the past century.  Do take the time to look at some photographs of the day if you weren't able to be there in person.  You can see them here
